The bell at the corner of Orinda Way and Irvin Drive
350. That's the number of times the Climate Change Task Force of the Orinda Presbyterian Church rang the bell on Saturday, October 24. "This is our way to participate in the world wide '350 Day,'" said spokesperson Eartha Newsong.
The Orinda Church was part of more than 5200 events in 181 countries organized by people coming together for a widespread day of environmental action. 350 parts per million of CO2 is believed by scientists and environmentalists to be the threshold above which our planet will face catastrophic consequences.
As the bell was ringing, church volunteers were out gathering signatures on petitions at the nearby farmers' market. "We will send it to Barack Obama, his wife and all of our representatives to the Copenhagen summit," said Newsong.
