The inaugural Pub Trivia event at Petar's got off to a rousing start with a full house of eager, brainy participants. Hosted by City of Lafayette Planners Michael Cass and Lindy Chan, this free community event featured eight distinct rounds for teams of two to five to collectively answer. Clearly some time and effort was spent crafting the questions and selecting a range of categories. Energetic participants were not shy about expressing the joy of answering correctly, "oh, yeah!" with boisterous high fives all around.
With the bar area full of teams from the City of Lafayette and the community, even a Lamorinda Weekly (LW) team, the free fun-filled evening was an entertaining mental exercise and arguably the hottest spot in town on a Wednesday night.
"Together we were able to help a local business, generate a fun and new activity for our community, and raise $120 for the non-profit World Vision," said Cass and Chan in a statement. "It's not like Trivial Pursuit," explained Whit Porter, possibly the only fellow in the room who knew that "Spirit in the Sky" was sung by Norman Greenbaum, "this is really more of a knowledge quiz."
Timely themed categories covered a diverse range of topics starting with Superbowl tidbits - "Name the first Superbowl game to use roman numerals" to current events, to the colorful world of music - bands that have a color in their name, civil rights - a nod to the recent Martin Luther King holiday, mnemonics - particularly challenging, name that haircut and movies currently in theaters - a sweep for Team LW.
First and second place winners were surprised with generous gift certificates from Petar's. Sadly Team LW came in fourth place, definitely due to trouble in the mnemonics round, third place winner was the "Granola" team, second place went to "Luke and the Black Hearts" and first place went to "Bad Intentions." With a range of ages and obviously a breadth of knowledge, it's not surprising that "Bad Intentions" team members all work for the UC Board of Regents and their senior member is a librarian. Congratulations to Anne Shaw, Stephanie Mangante and Kobie Crowder on a game well played.
Two more game nights are scheduled, February 24 and late March, with potentially more in the future.
