What's wrong with this picture? The $2 million ramp completed in April on the south side of the Lafayette BART station has no associated curb cuts anywhere in the adjacent parking lot to accommodate wheelchairs and no handicapped parking spots.
"The ramp was designed to provide access to the trail," said BART spokesperson Jim Allison. He explained that the handicapped parking requirement for the entire station is met with more than the required number of spots, 27, in the north parking lot which is closer to the station and has flatter access.
BART engineers are already working on the curb cut problem. According to Allison, generous curb cuts should be completed in six months, "probably sooner." It seems rather ironic that next to the expensive ramp is a sign informing handicapped riders to go back out to Happy Valley Road, down the block and enter on the north side of the station.
