| | | | | | Kelly Clancy and Kelly Suronen were the co-captains of Team Town of Moraga at the Relay For Life organized by the American Cancer Society (ACS) last weekend. During the event at the Saint Mary's College campus, members of the Town staff and Moraga's mayor relayed to walk for 24 hours in support of the cause.
"I was diagnosed with cervical cancer at age 29," says Clancy, "I've been cancer free now for two years." She and Suronen decided to raise money for research.
The purpose of the event is also to raise awareness about the different forms of cancer and the best ways to prevent and cure them. ACS pledges that all the money collected will go to cancer research. "Many people from the Town came to support us," said Clancy, "Karen Mendonca showed up with Bob Priebe around midnight and stayed for hours; Jill Keimach walked...Marty McInturf...Jill Mercurio, who came at 1:00 a.m. with her daughter Bella; Shawna Brekke Read and her husband walked on Saturday morning; Jay Ingram and his family; Yuliya Elbo, Beth Cowley and Cheryl Briones...they all came, and raised a lot of money. Many of our friends also came to support us."
On site, Moraga Public Works provided tables and canopy and a tent was installed with a bed so the captains could get a few hours sleep during the night. "We raised more than $2,000," said a proud Clancy.
Another 20 teams participated in the event, mostly composed of Saint Mary's students and faculty.
