| Inaugural Concert at the Reservoir Coming Soon
The Concert at the Reservoir marks the official opening to the public of the long-awaited permanent stage on May 12 from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. on the east side of the Reservoir, across from the kid's play area.
Dedicated Rotary members have labored selflessly for more than 15 years to construct and then deconstruct a stage to be used to put on their annual concerts, a showcase for young talented local student musicians, from which the proceeds were split between supporting local school programs and funding Rotary projects. John Sherry reports that, "Eighty percent of Rotarians dipped into their own pockets to contribute to the project," along with countless community members to turn their dream of a permanent stage into reality. "We are so happy with the way the stage turned out - coming in on budget and sooner than expected," said Sherry, thanks to fellow Rotarian Terry Ring and Ring Construction.
The stage location still allows views of the Reservoir, and is relatively close to the parking area and restrooms. Saturday's concert will feature the usual stellar line-up of musicians, from Stanley Intermediate School, Bentley, Acalanes and the Big Band of Rossmoor. Hot dogs, ice cream and more will be available for purchase along with raffle tickets. As always, the concert is free.
The Rotary Club will use the stage just one day per year, for the annual Concert at the Reservoir - EBMUD will oversee reservations every other day of the year (call to reserve the stage for special events). When not reserved for a specific purpose, park users are welcome to put on their own impromptu air-guitar rock concert or an interpretation of the Nutcracker. C. Tyson
Taste of Lafayette - The biggest foodie event in Lamorinda from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 will kick off with wine, beer and appetizers at Lafayette Plaza - the corner of Mt. Diablo Boulevard and Moraga Road. Participants can eat and stroll at their own pace to the 19 participating downtown restaurants offering tastes of their signature dish, or use the complimentary shuttle to pop in on all the eateries. Tickets are $45 per person that will benefit the Lafayette Community Foundation and the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. Circling back to the Plaza at evening's end, diners can enjoy coffee and dessert to cap off the night. Tickets available through www.lafayettechamber.org or by calling (925) 284-7404.
Dancing in the Plaza - For the first time ever, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce is hosting three dances starting at 7 p.m. on Friday evenings in June at Plaza Park, located at the corner of Moraga Road and Mt. Diablo Boulevard. Do Lamorinda residents have rhythm? If so, this will be the perfect opportunity to collectively bust a move for all to see. Kicking off the fun on June 15 will be a sock hop with music from the '50s, on June 22 there will be a square dance - with a professional caller - and on June 29, music from the 1970s with disco. Completely free; poodle skirts, cowboy hats and bell bottoms optional. Boogie nights have finally come to the suburbs.
Nature walk and bird watching - Long-time resident Ben Pettersson, experienced hiker and birdwatcher, will guide walkers on a tour of local trails every Wednesday (starting Wednesday June 20 and continuing on subsequent Wednesdays with the exception of July 4). Don't forget binoculars and a water bottle and, of course, wear comfortable, sturdy shoes. Path will be accessible to wheelchairs and scooters. Meet at the Alder room in the Lafayette Community Center at 10 a.m. (the outing should last until around noon), 500 St. Mary's Road, Lafayette.
