| Arman Marchiel of Orinda was selected as a cover Spirit in the San Francisco Opera's production of Mozart's Magic Flute. The competitive audition process, which involved two sets of auditions drawing from local choruses in and around the Bay Area, culminated with a final round of auditions at the War Memorial Opera House. After a grueling two-and-a-half hour try-out, a total of six boys - including 10-year-old Marchiel - were selected to perform as principals in Mozart's final opera, which is playing at the San Francisco War Memorial through July 8. The San Francisco Opera's new production is sung in English, features explosively colorful stage design, visual effects, and costumes, designed by the Japanese-American artist Jun Kaneko. Marchiel sings with the San Francisco Boys Chorus and has previously performed with the San Francisco City Chorus, as well as the San Francisco Symphony.
