On a bright February morning, Millie Tang's fourth-grade class from Los Perales Elementary School met with an EBMUD ranger at the Valle Vista Staging Area to receive work assignments. In an effort to couple hands on learning and community service, the students were instructed how to 'broom' invasive plants out of the watershed and plant buckeye seeds throughout the area. For the past five years, Tang has been taking her students to local watersheds to learn about the ecosystem and ways to care for our water supply. She is passionate about the students taking what they learn in textbooks and applying it to real-life experiences. Projects over the years have included building and cleaning wire cages to protect new tree growth, clearing invasive plant growth and weeding creek beds. Ranger Virginia told the students that she is always impressed with how much work fourth graders can accomplish.
