"The Majestic" is one of my favorite films that pays homage to the great films of Frank Capra - "It Happened One Night" and "It's a Wonderful Life."
The film stars Jim Carrey as Peter Appleton, a blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter who has amnesia as a result of an automobile accident. He finds himself in a small town where he is mistaken for a local hero, Luke Trimble, who was presumed killed in World War II. Together with Luke's father, played by Oscar winning actor and first recipient of the California Independent Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award Martin Landau ("Ed Wood"), they, with the community's support, restore and re-open the Majestic Theatre. Carrey's performance is not the typical Jim Carrey zaniness but an outstanding dramatic role. He should have received more recognition for his performance in this film.
The wonderful thing about movies is that we, as an audience, can experience magnificent performances like this forever. Lamorinda residents may see similarities in "The Majestic" story to the re-opening of the Rheem Theatre in 2010, as the communities came together for a beloved movie theatre.
As a gift for everyone, "The Majestic" will be shown for free on June 25 at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in theatre number four, which is the new performing arts theatre. Seating is limited to 65 per screening, so get your tickets at the Rheem box office as soon as possible to reserve your seat.
This daylong festivity will also include a special presentation and dedication of the newly installed chair lift at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. celebration dinner catered by Shelbys of Orinda, official restaurant of the California Independent Film Festival. Tickets for the dinner are $35, which includes priority seating for the 7:30 p.m. screening of "The Majestic." Dinner tickets must be purchased by June 22. Special announcements and recognitions will be presented during the celebration dinner.
Join us at the Rheem Theatre on June 25 to celebrate the accomplishments made over the past four years to make the Rheem Theatre the success it is today!
Listen to Derek every Saturday morning at 8 a.m. on Real to Reel, 1450AM KEST.
