| 'Star Trek Beyond' is Explosive Good Fun for Even Non-Trekkies |

The entire cast, since the 2009 JJ Abrams reboot of the "Star Trek" movie franchise, returns in the third installment, "Star Trek Beyond."
The cast includes Chris Pine (Captain James T. Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Commander Spock), Karl Urban (Doctor "Bones" McCoy), Simon Pegg (Scotty), John Cho (Sulu), Anton Yelchin (Chekov) and Zoe Saldana (Lieutenant Uhura). Sadly, Yelchin died in a freak car accident at his home on June 19 at the age of 27.
This time Justin Lin, best known for directing the "Fast and the Furious" movie franchise, directs this stellar cast. As you would except from Lin, this Star Trek film has an added dose of adrenaline, speed and steroid-fueled digital effects. The $150 million estimated budget gave Lin a lot of playing room.
When the USS Enterprise is destroyed, the courageous crew explores the deep uncharted area of space while ruthless mysterious enemies condemn them. We learn more about Captain James T. Kirk - who he is and his relationship with his father that drives him to continue his captaincy of the USS Enterprise. Kirk has all the adventures he could ask for as he is being falsely lured into uncharted space where he encounters Krall, portrayed by Golden Globe recipient Idris Elba (Luther), who plans to destroy the Federation.
During a few parts of the movie, I felt like I was watching another superhero film with all the building destruction and the battles taking place between good and evil, which is not the pace or elements of a meaningful "Star Trek" theme. But overall I enjoyed the film for what it has become - pure entertainment of a great sci-fi spectacle. Some Trekkies will disagree with me but that is what makes the world interesting.
"Star Trek Beyond" will, without question, be receiving several award nominations for special effects during award season later in the year. It is rated PG13 and has a total running time of 120 minutes.
"Star Trek Beyond" is currently playing at the Orinda Theatre and is one movie that must be seen on the big screen. Do not miss it. "Live long, and prosper."

August 27: Gorilla Fest at the Rheem - Enjoy some of the greatest gorilla movies ever made, including "King Kong" (1933), "Mighty Joe Young" (1949), "Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla" (1952) and "Konga" (1961). Hollywood legend and Oscar nominee Terry Moore will be in attendance and will also be inducted into the Classic Film Hall of Fame.
