With a genuine concern that there would be no football season, there were many people that deserve the credit for seeing that there would be a football season, albeit seven months late and abbreviated.
Serra High School Head Football Coach Patrick Walsh, who started the Golden State Coaches Alliance, De La Salle head coach Justin Alumbaugh and Ron Gladnick, the head coach at Torrey Pines High School, led the way from the outset, said Campolindo head coach Kevin Macy. "They're just the tip of the pyramid," Macy said.
There were several coaches and parents that were constantly contacting the assembly people, informing them of the "Let Them Play" movement and getting them on board. The statewide rallies also kept the issue on the front burners.
With all sports now commencing, Macy gives much of the credit to the football programs. "Football really made the difference in the state," Macy said. "All the other sports were willing to wait for permission, but football went out and made something happen. It's been an exhausting grind, but we had no choice because we could have no more games after April 17."
Even with the season officially starting, Macy is approaching the season with cautious optimism. "At this point, we don't know what will be taken away from us," Macy said. "We're relieved and the kids are excited but with so many requirements on us, it seems like we're looking over our shoulder at all time. The biggest hurdles were getting our scrimmage in and playing our first game which, we've been able to do."
